The religious ideas of the future must embrace all that exists in the world and is good and great, and at the same time have infinite scope for future development. All that was good in the past must be preserved; and the doors must be kept open for future additions to the already existing store. - Swami Vivekananda

"Prayer is the request for things befitting for God to give and for us to receive."- John Damascene

"God always gives the very best to those who leave the choice to Him" - Anonymous

There is something behind this world of senses, this world of eternal eating and drinking and talking nonsense, this world of false shadows and selfishness. There is something beyond all books, beyond all creeds, beyond the vanities of the world--and that something is the realization of God within yourself. - Swami Vivekananda - Talk given at Unity Hall, Hartford (Connecticut), USA, on March 8, 1895, as reported in "Hartford Times" (March 11, 1895). Complete Works, 1.325.

If you want to be religious, enter not the gate of any organized religions. They do a hundred times more evil than good because they stop the growth of each ones individual development. Religion is only between you and your God and no third person must come between you. - Swami Vivekananda - Complete Works - Vol.1

Krishna, Christ and Buddha are but waves on the infinite ocean that "I" am - Swami Vivekananda - talking about the concept of Universal Consciousness.

Whatever I am offered in devotion with a pure heart - a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water - I accept with joy.    - Bhagavad Gita

All pathways with heart lead to the summit of the same mountain - and the nearer they are to the top, the more they resemble. - Osho

The great abstraction of ideas in the world is what we call God. - Swami Vivekananda - Retreat given at the Thousand Island Park, USA. June 30, 1895. Complete Works, 7.21.

Mahatma Gandhi on Religion and Spirituality:

  • When I admire the wonder of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in worship of the Creator
  • I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.
  • Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of ones weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
  • I believe in the fundamental Truth of all the great religions of the world. I believe that they are all God given. I came to the conclusion long ago... that all religions were true and also that all had some error in them.
  • The most heinous and the most cruel crimes of which history has record have been committed under the cover of religion or equally noble motives.
  • Intolerance betrays want of faith in ones cause
  • My imperfections and failures are as much a blessing from God as my successes and my talents and I lay them both at his feet.
  • God has no religion.
  • "Faith... Must be enforced by reason...When faith becomes blind it dies.
  • It is good enough to talk of God whilst we are sitting here after a nice breakfast and looking forward to a nicer luncheon, but how am I to talk of God to the millions who have to go without two meals a day? To them God can only appear as bread and butter. Well, the peasants of India were getting their bread from the soil. I have offered them the spinning wheel in order that they may get butter, and if I appear today before the British public in my loin cloth, it is because I have come as the sole representative of those half-starved, half-naked dumb millions. - Gandhi Sutras

You are the consciousness which is the witness of all the drama, watching in amusement as the ego plays its games, dons different masks at different times and ends up identifying itself with the roles it plays. The real you is that ever-blissful, unchanging, blessed consciousness. -  Sri M (

I think personally, if you ask me, finding God is a matter of the heart. The more purified, the more kind, the better your heart is, the more you are moving towards the Supreme Reality. You can never find the Supreme Being with your brain. It is not possible because we are so limited, in fact the limited cannot understand the unlimited…it is not possible. If the limited can understand the unlimited then that is not limited. It is also unlimited. -  Sri M (

Creeds and sects have their parts to play, but they are for children, they last but temporarily. Books never make religions, but religions make books. We must never forget that. No book ever created God, but God inspired all the great books. And no book ever created a soul. We must never forget that. - Swami Vivekananda  (Talk given at Unity Hall, Hartford (Connecticut), USA, on March 8, 1895, as reported in "Hartford Times" (March 11, 1895). Complete Works, 1.324.)

Shall we advice people to kneel down and cry, "O miserable sinners that we are!" No, rather let us remind them of their divine nature.- Swami Vivekananda - Talk given at Unity Hall, Hartford (Connecticut), USA, on March 8, 1895, as reported in "Hartford Times" (March 11, 1895). Complete Works, 1.326.

Put out self, lose it, forget it. Just let God work, it is his business. We have nothing to do but stand aside and let God work. The more we go away, the more God comes in. Get rid of the little "I", and let only the great "I" live. - Swami Vivekananda during the Retreat given at the Thousand Island Park, USA. June 25, 1895. Complete Works, 7.14.

Rituals are the kindergarten of religion. They are absolutely necessary for the world as it is now; only we shall have to give people newer and fresher rituals. A party of thinkers must undertake to do this. Old rituals must be rejected and substituted by new ones. - Interview in The Hindu. Chennai, 1896. Complete Works, 5: 216-17.

Let us be at peace, perfect peace with ourselves, and give up our whole body and mind and everything as an eternal sacrifice unto God. Instead of the sacrifice of pouring oblations into the fire, perform this one great sacrifice day and night--the sacrifice of your little self.
This kind of sacrifice is called Ätma-yajna.
Swami Vivekananda - Class on Karma Yoga. New York, January 10, 1896. Complete Works, 1.102.

There is only one religion, the religion of Love
There is only one language, the language of the Heart
There is only one caste, the caste of Humanity

There is only one God, He is Omnipresent - Sri Satya Sai Baba
